Physio for Pregnancy

Using techniques such as manual therapy and advice to help with common pregnancy related conditions such as pelvic girdle pain, SPD and back pain. This involves looking at your posture when standing and lying. Then, we can change the way you use your body by creating awareness of the things that may be overloading your body in an incorrect way and giving you pain. Specific areas are tested for weakness or over-activity, which may be causing an imbalance. You will then be given advice and techniques to practice which make the changes necessary to get you back to normal.

Treatment techniques can involve, soft tissue massage, gentle joint mobilisations, muscle energy techniques and taping. Then provides you with a safe and effective program to regain function, strength  and reduce pain for the rest of your exciting journey, making you feel like you again!

Physio for Mums

Pregnancy and then bringing a baby into the world is a major physical event for your body to go through, so it makes sense to have a Physiotherapy service dedicated to Mothers, they really deserve it!

Physio for new mums usually begins with a Mummy MOT. The Mummy MOT postnatal check is a must have for any mum who has been pregnant, no matter when that was.  Pelvic floor and abdominal muscles have been stretched/strained and delivery is challenging, so a postnatal check is a good way to see where your body is at before moving forward.

The Mummy MOT system combines the practical principles of Physiotherapy assessment and the principles of functional retraining. In other words, it’s a thorough hands-on postnatal check with results and strategies to help you take that next step on your ‘back to you’ journey.

It involves getting a history of your pregnancy and delivery followed by a physical check of:

  • Alignment

  • Breathing pattern

  • Tummy gap

  • C-scar check

  • Pelvic Floor

  • Core Muscle activation

*please note that the assessing the pelvic floor will usually involve an internal vaginal exam which is the most accurate way of checking- but only with your full consent and comfort.

Finally you will be given

  • A bespoke postnatal recovery program that suits your day-to-day needs and personal goals.

  • A safe and effective initial exercise program to address any issues identified in the physical check

  • Advice on posture, lifting, use of buggy/sling

  • Advice on how to progress your fitness in a safe and effective way.

The Mummy MOT check will also screen for common postnatal conditions such as:

  • abdominal diastasis

  • pelvic floor dysfunction

  • urinary leaks

  • tight or painful scars

  • pelvic organ prolapse

  • pelvic pain

Physio for Mums is able to provide you with treatment sessions if needed. Treatment for Mums can involve some of the following approaches:

Biofeedback– Biofeedback is a good way of knowing if you have the right knack of contracting and releasing your pelvic floor. You can also keep an eye on progress.

E-stim– Electrical pelvic floor stimulation is a gentle and effective treatment to help restore normal tone and stability to the pelvic floor muscles

Manual Therapy– Manual therapy can be really useful for pelvic pain or pelvic floor dysfunction. A tight pelvic floor can be released manually which can then help with urinary issues, pelvic floor dysfunction  or pelvic/coccyx pain.

*please note that the vaginal probe used for biofeedback and E-stim is a separate purchase of £21 – which you can take it home and use it as a biofeedback device.

Exercises– Bespoke exercsies (if done with the correct alignment, technique and breathing pattern) are an effective way of managing and improving conditions such as diastasis and pelvic floor dysfunction. We are here to show you how to get the most out of your efforts and gain improvements.
